For this work, Sonya Isupova built a metaphorical satellite, a self-constructed machine that hovers above the land, mapping data with limited accuracy and transforming satellite images into maps. Using NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) data, which monitors water content in vegetation and open water bodies, she charts the Dnypro River’s altered course after the dam’s destruction. With the dam gone, the river has returned to its original bed. The map unfurls like the river itself, revealing swirls, rapids, channels, and spurs piece by piece. Imperfect and incomplete, the map embodies the inherent inaccuracies of all mapping — the only certainty is that the roll keeps turning, and the river keeps emerging. For the exhibition at E-WERK Luckenwalde, Isupova constructed a new vertical drawing machine, transforming the way the maps are presented. Instead of lying flat, the maps cascade downward to the floor as they are generated in real time, allowing audiences to witness mapping as it happens, emphasizing both the fluidity of the landscape and the continuous production of knowledge. Together with scientifiic collaborator&nbsp; Anatolii Chernov (PhD) will look at vegetation data of the region and develop an algorithm for processing data gathered from the crop monitoring satellite. &nbsp; I am focusing on exploring the ecological repercussions of the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on the landscape. With a particular emphasis on the heavily affected regions in the South and the destruction of the Kakhovska Dam in June of 2023. &nbsp; Together with ecologists and earth scientists, I aim to create an extensive series of maps tracking the changes in vegetation levels of the Southern Ukraine. All the maps will be created by my own personal map-making machine, a prototype of which I’ve designed for my graduation project at la HEAD. For the next stages of the project, I will construct new printing machines as well as make adjustments to existing ones. Together with the industrial designer, enhances the mechanism for paper placement and pen-gripping. Allowing me to create larger, more diverse, and distinct maps of the region. Through speculative fiction, I connected my stay on the shores of Lake Leman to the experience of living next to the Kakhovska Reservoir in Southern Ukraine, specifically in anticipation of its destruction. During my residency, I developed a ritual to help me embody this idea. Every day, I wake up and gaze at the man-made sea, trying to imagine myself within it. I swim daily, eager to utilize its full potential. As I reach the middle of the sea, I envision dozens of settlements buried beneath me. I picture the water receding – not gradually, but in an instant – leaving me alone in its wake. Then, I watch as a forest begins to grow in its place. This exhibition invites us to explore, in a surprising way, the digital machines that shape industry and society today. With Mapping an Uncertain Landscape the artist wants to explore the ecological repercussions of the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on the landscape and infrastructure, especially in the most affected southern regions. Infrastructure is often invisible until it fails, as was tragically demonstrated on 6 June 2023 with the destruction of the Kakhovska Dam. This catastrophe not only caused enormous human suffering, but has also turned out to be a major environmental disaster with far-reaching consequences. In collaboration with ecologists and geoscientists, the artist creates an extensive series of maps depicting vegetation data at key moments around the destruction of the dam: days before, days after and one year later.
